AVI Global Special Situations (“AGSS”) NAV increased by +2.6% in May.
Samsung C&T was the standout performer, adding +188bps to NAV with a share price return of +45%. Vivendi (+78bps) and Kyocera (+56bps) also contributed strongly.
At the other end of the ledger, Amorepacific was the largest detractor, shaving off -52bps followed by Hyosung Corp which – suffering the newsletter curse – detracted (-38bps) from returns. Chrysalis (-30bps) also detracted.
The Fund returned to growth in April 2026, reversing some of the losses of the previous month, with a +5.3% return vs +6.9% for the Fund’s benchmark, the MSCI AC World Index (£) .
Hyosung Corporation – which we discuss below – was the most significant contributor (+183bps) as the shares rose +78%. Other strong contributors included Samsung C&T (+86bps), HD Hyundai (+65bps) and Vivendi (+59bps).
Jardine Matheson (-46bps) and Tokyo Gas (-35bps) were the largest detractors.
The Fund’s strong start to 2026 came to an abrupt halt, due to the war in Iran. Over the month of March, the fund returned -10.8% vs -5.4% for the Fund’s benchmark, the MSCI AC World Index (£).
The war in Iran led to considerable volatility across global markets, as investors attempt to price the risks of further escalation and economic ramifications of arguably, the worst oil crisis in history. The portfolio behaved in line with our expectations and experience of such market conditions, with the portfolio weighted average discount widening to -42% from -38% over the course of the month, serving as a headwind to performance.
The Fund has continued the strong start to 2026, with a +6.3% return in February 2026, versus +3.4% for the Fund’s benchmark, the MSCI AC World Index (£). This brings year-to-date returns to +9.3% against +4.3% for the benchmark.
Performance was broad-based with Samsung C&T (+87bps) the standout performer, followed by Jardine Matheson (+81bps) and HD Hyundai (+66bps). Indeed, it is interesting to observe that nine of the top ten largest contributors, were all listed in Asia and delivered returns between +9% and +25%.
At the bottom of the table was New Corp (-51bps), Chrysalis (-49bps) which saw a share price decline of -13% over the month and Vivendi (-26bps) also detracted.
2026 has started off strongly, with the fund returning +2.8% in January vs 0.9% for the benchmark, the MSCI AC World Index (£).
D’Ieteren was the standout performer adding +141bps to NAV and we write about this below.
Other strong contributors included Samsung C&T (+74bps), Hyosung Corp (+55bps) and Mitsubishi Logistics (+51bps) – with share price returns of +26%, +33% and +10%, respectively.
At the other end, Chrysalis was a meaningful (-48bps) detractor, as the shares fell -6% on the last day of the month, following the publication of a disappointing NAV which revealed a further write-down at wefox (7% of NAV). We wrote last month about the proposed orderly realisation. With the shares trading at a 33% discount (36% ex-listed and cash), we see attractive returns from this discount unwinding.
