Japan’s governance reform agenda continued to move from policy direction to practical implementation in August. On 12 August, the Tokyo Stock Exchange (“TSE”) published the results of an institutional investor survey on companies demonstrating meaningful progress in “management that is conscious of cost of capital and stock price”. Drawing on comments from domestic and overseas investors, it highlighted companies seen as making substantive progress against the TSE’s request to improve capital efficiency and market valuation.
AJSS’s NAV returned +1.3% over the month, while the benchmark returned -0.7%, both in GBP.
In July, AI and semiconductor-related stocks came under pressure, despite having been a major driver of market performance earlier in the year. The sell-off reflected growing concerns around stretched valuations, the financing burden of AI infrastructure investment and rising competition, and highlighted the risk of market leadership being concentrated in a narrow group of momentum-driven stocks.
At the same time, Japan’s policy agenda continued to focus on capital allocation and the effective use of corporate balance sheets. On 21 July 2026, the Financial Services Agency (“FSA”) and Tokyo Stock Exchange (“TSE”) jointly published the revised Corporate Governance Code. The revision should be viewed alongside the TSE’s April 2026 update to its “request for management to be conscious of the cost of capital and stock price”, which placed particular emphasis on the appropriate allocation of management resources. The scale of Japan’s “idle cash” issue has also been highlighted by Nomura, who recently estimated that listed Japanese companies would need to deploy JPY 30–40 trillion into areas such as capital expenditures, mergers and acquisitions, and shareholder returns for cash ratios to converge with those in the US and Europe.

In May, Japanese equities were driven by a narrow rally in AI and semiconductor related stocks, creating a difficult backdrop for strategies like AJSS, which don’t typically invest in those sectors or high-growth companies. In June, however, market leadership broadened somewhat and AJSS recovered from the prior month’s relative weakness, supported by strong performance from selected value and engagement-driven holdings. While technology stocks remained an important driver of the market, the recovery in AJSS’s portfolio suggests that investor attention also began to return to individual stock-selection and company-specific catalysts.
AJSS’s NAV returned -2.3% over the month, while the benchmark returned +4.9%, both in GBP.
One of the top 3 contributors over the month was Wacom Co., Ltd. (+18% share price), which coincided with AVI’s public campaign launched on 14th May 2026, seeking governance reform and changes to the company’s board. Kurabo Industries had contributed as well, returning +8%, after reporting its FY March 2026 results, announcing a dividend increase and continuing to execute its share buyback programme. In contrast, the largest detractor was Sharingtechnology, whose shares declined by 15% despite reporting solid first-half results and confirming the upward revision to its FY2026 profit guidance announced in March.
AJSS’s NAV returned +1.3% over the month, while the benchmark returned +4.4% (both in GBP).
The largest contributor over the month was Atsugi Co., Ltd. (+25% share price), as the stock continued to recover from January’s downward revisions to its guidance. Kurabo Industries was the second‑largest contributor, returning +13% as the market looked through near‑term earnings headwinds and responded positively to ongoing structural reforms and shareholder‑friendly capital allocation, including plant closures and an active share buyback programme. By contrast, Sharingtechnology was the main detractor, with the shares drifting 4% lower over the month despite an upgraded full‑year profit forecast driven by a one‑off gain from a business carve‑out, in the absence of further catalysts.
